UIHC Melrose Dining Room
By Ryan Kopf - Jan. 29, 2009
One will probably not think of a hospital as a place with good food, but the Melrose Dining Room at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics seems to have created an exception with their Chef's special pasta bar.
Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, one can find the Pasta Bar open at the fifth floor of the UIHC pomerantz building. It's not all about pasta, though, and that's what makes it great. Visitors can often choose from Chicken, Tofu, Peppers, Mushrooms, and various other vegatables to be stir-fried fresh. Then they can choose rice or pasta, and from a variety of sauce toppings, ranging from Teriyaki to Marinara sauce.
In our review, we choose Chicken and Peppers, over rice with Teriyaki sauce. One word: delicious. The chicken was cooked perfectly, and tasted fresh as well. The Teriyaki sauce was a consistent thickness, and made the flavor great.
For students, the price isn't bad. $6.88 for what we got, including a 20oz Pop. Fresh stir-fry that isn't fast food anywhere else would cost in the double digits. Overall, a great choice if you're at the hospital. They are not open for long, though. It seems they Chef's Special only runs from 11am to 2pm, so get there fast!
