Oyama Sushi Japanese Restaurant
By Ryan Kopf
At Oyama Sushi they offer Japanese food rich with flavor, coupled with friendly service, good sushi, and a pleasant atmosphere. And this isn't even an advertisement. Simply by walking into Oyama Sushi Japanese Restaurant (right by Sycamore mall), I could tell this would be a pleasant experience.
First, in comparing the atmosphere between Oyama and Aoeshe, which I reviewed last week, I noticed Oyama offered much more bright atmosphere throughout, with a less gloomy feeling. More importantly, though, was the service. The person taking our order, had quickly brought our appetizers afterwards (while we waited for a significant while longer at Aoeshe Japanese Restaurant).
The food itself was rather good as well. Although this time I did not order as much as usual, it was enough to get a sampling of the quality of Oyama's Japanese food. Once again I ordered Gyoza, Yaki Tori, and also some Miso soup. The Miso soup was rich with flavor, and also had all the pieces of greens and tofu that it needed. After trying a California roll I found they are also skilled with sushi as well. We even witnessed a customer tell the chef "You're Sushi was wonderful, thank you sir."
The Gyoza was as if it were made by an artisan, taking pride in an ancient craft, as it was delicious, unhindered by overly smoky flavor or bad taste. Their Yaki Tori tasted just about perfect, with an excellent combination of meat flavor and a smooth sauce.
Overall the positive atmosphere and quality food made Oyama the best Japanese Restaurant in Iowa City so far.
