Smoking at a Low

A National College Health Assessment survey of University of Iowa students revealed a surprising factor about college students and smoking. The percentage of college students that are smoking since in bars and restaurants has been outlawed in Iowa.

A National College Health Assessment survey that questioned 882 University of Iowa graduates was taken this past spring. The results reported 18.3 percent of the students smoking in the past 30 days. This is a lower amount of students in over 20 years.

The report showed only 2.6 percent of students smoking daily, which is nearly 2 percent lower than the national average of college students.

The percent has dropped 5 percent in the last four years. Much of this has been attributed to the University of Iowa banning smoking on campus when the Smoke Free Air Act was passed in 2008.

Ten years ago, the amount of students smoking was at 25.3 percent. Today, it is a full 7 percent lower than it was.

The results of the survey were a little surprising in other areas as well. It showed that students overestimate the amount of their peers that smoke. They guessed the number who have smoked in the last 30 days to be somewhere around 87 percent.

Although the number has dropped greatly, University of Iowa officials say that there is still much more work to do where students and smoking are concerned.

The survey did not question students about marijuana use, but other studies have shown that tobacco use is independent from other habits and marijuana use has remained steady since 2008.
