Superbowl Sunday Brings a Chicken Wing Shortage

Superbowl Sunday means a lot of things for people, and a large portion of that is food. But for Iowa City, this food-related Superbowl Sunday issue means something unusual this year: no chicken wings.

According to a recent post on the Iowa City Patch website, this Sunday, Iowa City has experienced a shortage in chicken wings and costs of chicken for these great wings will be going up significantly.

Americans each year eat 1.2 billion wings during the Superbowl game. That is a lot of chickens, and this year there are worries that there will not be enough to meet all of the demand for them. because of a projected shortage in wings due to a shortage in chickens raised this year.

There were less chickens raised this year than usual, which leads to the suspicion of an upcoming wing crisis when chicken is in very high demand. This happened because of the drought and corn shortage.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, though, this rumor has been blown way out of proportion. They have stated that there will be no shortage according to the pricing system of supply and demand.

Grocery stores such as Hy-Vee i Iowa City are not worried, though. Hy-Vee has affirmed that there will be enough wings for everyone that wants to buy them, with one slight change.

Customers will be paying a little more, still, due to a slight wing shortage and a hike in the price to make up for it.
